Salzburg Austria

A fairly run of the mill poach. Wandering through Salzburg, spot a 5ton truck with the smiling faces of tech crew plastered on the side of it… my people are nearby! Yup, there they are. Huddled around the stage door creating smoke effects and consuming coffee. I introduce myself, and after a comical exchange of looks between all the crew, I’m in!

A lovely 19th century venue (1886?) that has evolved into an excellent example of 21st century performance space. There were several great examples of technology adapting to an historic space. From the modern automated fly system, to the clever moving light positions in the back of the balcony, they have made this space work for them.

One of the highlights for me was the 60’s stage management station on stage left. Absolute gem. Completely refitted with modern video and automation equipment the crew apparently fought to save this time capsule.

What was the second space, has been given over to the local puppet theatre as their permanent home. This came about after the puppet company started a production of The Sound of Music. The production was so popular they needed a bigger space. Yes I did get a tour, but no photos were allowed. Trust me it was amazing. Roll drops, oleos’ fly lines and every trick you can think of were deployed for this show. Really fantastic craftsmanship.

Salzburg also has seven more performance spaces, but access was not to be for this guy. I highly recommend a visit to this city.

Not sure I would want my face in the side of the company truck.
